Our Prediction:

Wellington will win

Wellington – Otago Match Prediction | 14-09-2019 22:05

Wellington will also have high expectations from their wicketkeeper Blundell who cracked a couple of half-centuries last season. Their batting seems reliant mainly on Devon Conway, Adam Hose and Tom Blundell. Patel took nine wickets in as many matches last term and the off-spinner was the pick of the bowlers in the last game with figures of 2-39 from four overs. Skipper Bennett was the most economical bowler, conceding 28 runs off his four overs, and he will be looking to lead from the front once again. Hamish Bennett, James Neesham and Jeetan Patel form the major threat in this bowling attack. Conway and Hose scored 45 and 36 respectively in the tournament opener against the Knights and it will be crucial from the team's perspective that at least one of them goes on to score big.

They were very impressive with the bat in their campaign opener against Canterbury Kings with Hamish Rutherford's 54 and Anaru Kitchen's 44 being the highlights. The left-arm chinaman kept things tight and finished his quota of four overs with figures of 1-26. Otago's bowling will depend mainly on Christi Viljoen, Jacob Duffy and Michael Rippon. Viljoen was the standout performer with the ball against the Kings with figures of 2-13 from two overs and the pacer will be backed by his team to do well in this match. Skipper Duffy was expensive last time and he will look to bounce back in style. Neil Broom and Shawn Hicks, who hit two half-centuries last season, are also key figures in this line-up. Otago Volts will expect these two batsmen to put up a strong batting performance against Wellington as well. Rippon was pretty impressive as well.

Mitre 10 Cup

The team's bowling department looks well-oiled with Ollie Newton, Jeetan Patel and Ben Sears all exhibiting good form. Newton, with ten wickets in six games, is amongst the season's top five bowlers while Sears has six wickets in three games including a four-fer against Canterbury Kings. Their top three - Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell and Adam Hose - have shown good form this Super Smash and the team will be counting on them to score the big runs against Otago Volts. Patel has bowled well occasionally and the team will need the off-spinner to lend good support to Newton and Sears. However, Wellington will also want James Neesham and Tom Blundell to step up. Hose has hit two fifties this season and is averaging close to 49. Bracewell is currently the second-best batsman in the competition with 245 runs which includes three half-centuries, one of which was a magnificent 29-ball 60 in the reverse encounter.

The Aces eventually won the match with six wickets in hand and more than two overs to spare. All Aces needed was - to bat responsibly which they did to perfection and thereby denied Firebirds to sneak into the game. Although they started off brilliantly with the ball by picking Martin Guptill on the first delivery of the second innings, they couldn't put pressure on star-studded batting lineup of Auckland Aces.

Jacob Duffy and Christi Viljoen have been the standout performers for Otago in terms of bowling. The team will once again expect strong performances from Hamish Rutherford, Anaru Kitchen and Ben Cox. Kitchen has scored the most runs for the Volts this Super Smash season and he even hit a fifty in the reverse encounter against the Wellington Firebirds. Viljoen, who took a four-fer in the reverse fixture, could be difficult to deal with in the middle overs. Duffy is one of the tournament's leading wicket-takers with ten wickets in six matches and the skipper will look to land a few early blows on the Firebirds in the powerplay. It was a good batting effort from Otago Volts in the previous game against Auckland Aces with almost every batsman chipping in with decent contributions. Rutherford top-scored with 37 last time and it will be up to him to take the team off to a brisk start.

With not much time to go, both the sides would want to stay in the top four until the end of the round-robin stage and that is what both sides will be hoping to achieve as the end result of the upcoming game. Otago are currently placed at fourth spot with two wins in seven games but will be displaced by Wellington Firebirds if they fail to come ahead in their upcoming encounter. Barring Northern Knights, who are 10 points ahead of next best team in the tournament, no team is certain of a semi-final spot yet. Wellington Firebirds and Otago Volts will be facing each other on 27th January at Dunedin in a bid to get into the top-four. We are almost about to hit the business end of the tournament in the ongoing Burger Kings Super Smash and the table is still wide open.

As all the previous matches of Ford Trophy were good and exciting and all the teams are performing well in the matches and also the great performances in the batting and the bowling from the players. Especially the Otago, Central Districts, Canterbury and Auckland performing well.

Wellington, on the other hand, have not got the start they would have wanted. They faced a big defeat in the opening match of the season against the Knights before their next game against Auckland Aces was washed out. Wellington will be playing under more pressure which is another reason why we feel that Otago have a better chance of emerging victorious here. But they will be aware of the fact that they have not been able to beat Wellington Firebirds in their previous three completed meetings. Though they will be playing at their home ground, having lost two of their last four completed matches here won't give them much confidence. Otago Volts have made an ideal start to their Super Smash campaign, beating Canterbury Kings by five wickets in Sunday's encounter.
