Athletic Bilbao (@1.66) vs Alaves (@6.5)

Our Prediction:

Athletic Bilbao will win

Athletic Bilbao – Alaves Match Prediction | 23-09-2019 12:30

The capacity of the stadium is 19,840 and it has to be noted that it is the third oldest stadium in Spanish football. The club were founded in 1921 and they play their home games at Estadio Mendizorrotza. After spending several years in the Spanish Segunda Division, los Babazorros returned to the top flight in 2016. Alaves is a Spanish football club located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Alava.

We see a small number of goals on their away games, with the last 4 consecutive matches producing under 2.5. As it was already said, Alaves is a bad guest. They win rarely as an away side, but this season they hope that things can change. They have one injured player. Burgui will not suit up for this game. Their defense is looking good as of now, but their first real threat will be here, with Ath Bilbao being one of the best home teams in La Liga.

Highlighted Player (John Guidetti):

Alaves have been the highest ranked of the Basque clubs for virtually the entire season but theyve been caught by Athletic over the past couple of weeks and its now Alaves who are playing catch-up here. The battle for 7th was about the only thing still up for discussion this time last year. Fortunately there is plenty more to keep an eye on at both ends this term but this Saturdays match between Athletic Club and Alaves has the feel of a 7th place showdown.

Alaves are having an exceptional season but they have just started to see luck desert them in recent weeks and theyve fallen out of the top four for almost the first time this season. Abelardos men head into this one having lost 3 of their last 4 matches in all competitions. They were beaten 3-0 at Atletico Madrid last weekend but the scoreline flattered Diego Simeones men slightly and Alaves should still take belief into this one as they remain in the top six heading into match-day 16.

That may not exactly be the recipe for a classic here but Basque derbies are always fascinating in their own way and itll be interesting to see if Athletic have the creativity to open Alaves up if they do come here with a park the bus attitude. The similarities between these two coaches go beyond their shared surnames with both placing great emphasis on hard work and sold defensive foundations.

San Mames Barria will host a small Basque derby between Athletic Club and Deportivo Alaves. Athletic Club aim to extend their unbeaten run in the 2019/2020 La Liga campaign and you should bear in mind that they are eyeing their fourth clean sheet of the season. The Lions are a real force to be reckoned with at home and given Deportivo Alaves poor performance in a 1-0 loss to Sevilla, we are tempted to put our money on Inaki Williams and Co.

Athletic Bilbao vs Deportivo Alaves Prediction

The Lions, on the other hand, are having a season to forget, with the team sitting in the relegation zone ahead of Matchday 16. Los Babazorros are a real force to be reckoned with at home and you should bear in mind that they are undefeated at their Estadio de Mendizorroza this term. Estadio de Mendizorroza will host Mondays football game between Deportivo Alaves and Athletic Club, the two Basque clubs. As expected, Alaves were beaten by Atletico Madrid at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in their last league match, with the team dropping to fifth place in the standings. Athletic Club experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-0 loss to Levante in Valencia and, taking everything into account, we believe that there is a big value in betting on the hosts, who defeated the likes of Real Madrid and Villarreal at home earlier this term.

Theyve been tough defensively and based their success on such an approach, which promises more of the same in Bilbao. Los Leones opened the campaign with a thriller 1-0 win over Barcelona and built on it with a confident win over Real Sociedad (2-0) at this ground, as well as draws at Getafe (1-1) and Mallorca (0-0 most recently).

They did not shine against an in-form Girona side seven days ago in La Liga, but still managed to snatch a last-gasp win via stoppage-time penalty from the star man Aritz Aduriz. The story is completely opposite with the visitors. They advanced into the last 16 round of Copa del Rey in some style aging eight goals without conceding a single over two legs against Huesca. They opened the new season in a poor fashion, but they seem to have found the right form. The Lions head into this off the back of two consecutive clean sheet wins over Huesca and Girona.
